Last summer Liverpool star wanted to leave Anfield for a club involved in the Champions League. But Steven Gerrard had a big role in persuading Luis Suarez to stay with the Reds.
The Uruguayan striker was courted by major football clubs in Europe last summer, including Real Madrid and Arsenal, who have made concrete offers for Suarez. At one point was close to signing with the the Premier League rivals, but eventually remained at Anfield, and in December signed a contract extension with Liverpool.
In an interview with FourFourTwo, Suarez said that a big influence in making this decision had Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard.
“He didn’t talk about me, or through me, in the press, but in person,” said Suarez. “In those moments I forgot that he was world football great Gerrard, a Liverpool legend, but as a humble person, who spoke to me with all his heart for hours.”
“He said I was the best forward he’d ever played with, which given the amazing strikers that he’s played with at Liverpool, was amazing for me to hear. I’ll never forget that.”
Suarez has played an important role this season for Liverpool, the team which is currently ranked in a Champions League place. Even if not scored for a few matches, the Uruguayan striker creates the most important goal opportunities for his team-mates, and do not forget, has 23 goals to his credit this season, being the Premier League’s top scorer at the moment.
