HJK Helsinki provided the big surprise of the night defeating FC Schalke 04, UEFA Champions League last season semi-finalists. Slovan Bratislava defetead AS Roma with 1-0, and NK Maribor obtainde a big victory againts Glasgow Rangers (2-1).
With the UEFA Europa League final taking place in Bucharest, the five Romanian clubs made a good start. SC Vaslui, FC Steaua Bucuresti and FC Rapid Bucuresti obtained two-goal wins. FC Dinamo Bucuresti and CS Gaz Metan Medias were defeated by FC Vorksla Poltava (2-1) and FK Austria Wien (3-1).
